Read on the WondrousBooks blog. 1.5 stars And I am being generous. Here s an idea write a book about Mexico in which you describe the beauties and history of Mexico, the archaeological treasures, the unknown Mexico DON T write another book about Mexican thugs, an abundance of drugs, bandits, filth, thieves and other gross and uninteresting things.I don t know in what way I was deceived by the blurb, but I honestly didn t expect a book which relies solely on vulgarity to impress its readers Read on the WondrousBooks blog. 1.5 stars And I am being generous.H...

As a fan of William Hjortsberg s 1978 horror hardboiled mashup Falling Angel, I couldn t wait to read this, his return to noir This time there s no supernatural element, but it s plenty intense, taking you to late 60s Mexico, and into the shoes of a hippie from the states who may or may not have just killed a...

It was the 80s and I was chilling with some Mexican friends in Valle De Santiago, not too far from where most of the action in William Hjortsberg s Ma ana takes place A bunch of local farmers came over in the evening toting a few bottles of El Presidente brandy and some low grade weed It was a fun night but at some point I lost track of what happened I woke up the next morning with one hell of a headache One of the farmers was shaking me Quick, we have to sell some hay After a few turns It was the 80s and I was chilling with some Mexican friends in Valle De Santiago, not too far from where most of the action in William Hjortsberg s Ma ana takes place A b...

I have mixed feelings on this book I enjoyed the author s style His phrasing immediately drew me into the story For me, the strongest aspect of this story is setting The author puts us right with the characters, sparking all our senses so that we feel as if we re there in Mexico with them Then there s the not so good stuff, which mostly overshadows the positives There is very little character development here The story is written in first person, from Tod s perspective, yet virtually the I have mixed feelings on this book I enjoyed the author s style His phrasing immediately drew me into the story For me, the strongest aspect of this story is setting The author puts us right with the characters, sparking all our senses so that we feel as if we re there in Mexico with them Then there s the not so good stuff, which mostly overshadows the positives There is very little character development here The story is written in first person, from Tod s perspective, yet virtually the only things we learn about him are that he likes to travel and get high We re given flashbacks of the couple s past together, which is the only way we learn anything about their relationship and history The plot doesn t go anywhere until past the halfway point The first half of the book is Tod bumbling his way through Mexico in search of his wife, but keeping himself too stoned to reasonably function ...
